What You’ll Never Read on My Blog

I follow many “social media mavens” and just regular Joe’s in the online world to expand my horizons and education. However, once in awhile, I notice these folks take liberties to post about a negative experience they had with a hotel chain, car dealership or the clerk at McDonald’s that morning. I guess that is the beauty of having your own blog – it is like your own personal rant page.

You won’t see me do any of that.

This blog is not a “rant blog.” If I have a negative experience with a company, I’ll probably complain to my husband or close friends for about a week, and then be done with it.  If the experience is truly bad, I’ll follow up with the company via phone or direct email – but I don’t see the point in ranting about it online.

These are the kind of positive experiences we all need! Goofing off w my friends on the bed of a 2011 Dodge Ram Outdoorsman truck at the POMA Conference. (photo credit: Lisa Metheny of Outdoor Inspirations)

Additionally – you won’t see me stray too far off the topics of: outdoor TV, outdoor industry folks and events  and my experiences with them.  (I may throw in a book review or two just for added flavor.)

But why does this matter? Because you read this blog under the assumption that I will have interesting, slightly witty things to say about my job, my life and the industry. If you suddenly read a complaint about my latest experience at a big box retailer – it feels like I’ve broken a silent contract between us. Plus,  doesn’t it add to more negativity? I think you will agree we all need more positive experiences to read and talk about.

Please share any off-topic blog post experiences you’ve had! How did it make you feel?

Rants aren’t always bad, if constructive. They hold the retailer, etc responsible. Remember when Kevin Smith was kicked off the Southwest flight for being too big, regardless that he had paid for two seats? If he hadn’t ranted, they still might be pulling the same stuff. God knows it’s not a fight for civil rights, but if there’s truly an injustice, don’t hold back! But I applaud you for cementing a rule for yourself and your blog.

I’m (usually) a believer in the “if you don’t have something nice to say don’t say at all” rule.
